Big Water - Sunday 19th June 2016

Did the short walk around Big Waters last Sunday with Alan J and Ian D.  It was quite a good day but it was spoilt by finding the 1st Hide had been vandalised and the side window had all the metal shutters taken off completely and the complete frame had been thrown into the lake.   Here are a few pictures from the wander round.

7.001 Nemophora degeerella
First one I have ever seen at Big Waters

70.054 Silver-ground Carpet Xanthorhoe montanata
Saw several of these quite common day flying moths also

The family of Swans have moved permanently from Little Waters

Common Blue Damselfly (Thanks to Alan J for correcting my identification)
Quite a few around especially at the public end of the main pond

Common Tern
4 shots of it diving into the water between the First Hide and the Island

59.027 Small Tortoiseshell Aglais urticae
One of the most worn of the species I have ever seen

The remains of the frame from the side window of the 1st hide just thrown
into the pond.  Even if the Toerags get caught nothing ever happens to them
just a caution and sometimes not even that

Sedge Warbler commuting back and forward with food for the family

Possibly Tree BumbleBees which have taken over a nest box

Cardinal Beetle - Pyrochroa serraticornis
Up to about 10 outside the main hide, they are predatory and eat insects

Red-legged Partridge
Only ever seen on the North Scrape, even more so recently with the cows
now having access to the scrape
